The first rhinestones, which surfaced around the mid 19th century, were lead crystals said to be sourced from the Rhine River (hence their name) and because of their scarcity, only the truly affluent could afford them. Some years later, Austrian jeweler Swarovski perfected the rhinestone-making process to such a degree that his brilliant jewels were no longer called rhinestones but "Austrian crystals" instead.
